  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 24-28, 33-24, 34-34 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    18 % Kuerten – 18 of 100
    19 % Mantilla – 15 of 77

25 years later, as I write a few days before Monte Carlo ’24, it looks a bit strange that two one-handed players could have faced each other in the semifinal of a Masters 1K event on clay, but at the time it was normal… Deciding break came at 3-all in the 3rd set; even though Kuerten [19] lost two points from 30/15 attacking the net in the following game, he attacked the net again, and saved the break point. At 5:4 he found himself at 15/40, and again his offensive attitude helped him (all his serve-and-volley actions come from the 10th game of that set). In the quarterfinal, Mantilla survived an amazing battle against fellow Spaniard, Albert Costa 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 after 2 hours 44 minutes, leading 4:1* in the 2nd set, and trailing *2:5 in 3rd to save four match points.

    Serve & volley: Kuerten 3/3, Mantilla 1/2
