    Points won by each set: | 39-30, 30-31, 29-25 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    35 % Ferreira – 34 of 97
    42 % Sampras – 37 of 87

Ferreira’s performance at Masters ’95 may be considered as the best one in history of this event which didn’t allow the semifinal participation. Apart from the cause & effect relationship (I generally reject this approach considering it illogical) he was two points away from the semifinal losing his first ’round robin’ match to Becker, and five points away (no doubt about it) facing Sampras. When Ferreira [9] and Sampras [1] entered the court, the American had already secured his semifinal berth while Ferreira needed to win in straight sets to eliminate Becker. Sampras seemed to be playing in an 80-90% mode which led to sporadic whistles from the German spectators after he lost the tie-break 1/7. In the 2nd set Ferreira had a break point at 3:2 and led 4:3 (40/0) – triple mini-match point; Sampras withstood the first two break points with unreturned serves, on the third occasion his BH-volley touched the sideline – in response Ferreira’s passing-shot landed a few centimetres behind the baseline. The Afrikaner led 40/15 in the following game, but failed again to be one game away from victory. After the first game of the decider (saved a break point) he changed his polo short to a striped one, and broke Sampras the only time. Ferreira finished the contest with an ace out-wide, he was happy because he still had a reasonable chance to move further – the following day his friend Kafelnikov had to steal a set from Becker which was plausible as he had defeated the German earlier that year indoors. It didn’t happen though, Becker won 6-4, 7-5 and advanced thanks to a 2% better ratio of sets won/lost.

    Sampras 2-1… 5-2 (.714)
    Becker 2-1… 4-3 (.571)
    Ferreira 2-1… 5-4 (.555)
    Kafelnikov 0-3… 1-6

Becker depended on Sampras and ultimately triumphed in the event, it reflected a situation a year before – Becker’s loss in his last ’round robin’ match meant Sampras’ elimination; Becker overcame Edberg 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 though, Sampras moved further, and defeated his saviour in the final.

Ferreira experienced a win over Sampras after a match with very similar progress a few weeks earlier in Lyon.
