  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 35-31, 29-16 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    33 % Kuerten – 18 of 53
    15 % Coria – 9 of 58

The 19-year-old Coria [41] was a sensation of the clay-court season in 2001: triumph in Vina del Mar, quarterfinal in Buenos Aires, semifinal in Monte Carlo and final in Mallorca made the short Argentinian, not known to a broader public at the end of 2000, one of favourites before the French Open ’01. In the first round he had a very tough draw as he faced the main favourite Kuerten, and lost quicker than people could have expected: 1-6, 5-7, 4-6. In their first meeting a few weeks earlier in Monaco, Coria was playing very good tennis in the opener, had a break point at 3:2, led 4:3 – since that moment Guga [2] had the upper hand and broke his six years younger opponent thrice. In hindsight, that semifinal was like a final for the Brazilian because Coria would become the best clay-courter in the world two years later while Kuerten’s rival in the Monte Carlo final, Arazi, achieved his career-best result then.

    Serve & volley: Kuerten 1/1, Coria 1/2
