Points won by each set: | 29-23, 33-24, 37-29 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
38 % Agassi – 33 of 85
31 % Kuerten – 28 of 90
Court no. 2 and the only quarterfinal match at Wimbledon in the 90s, entirely played from the back of the court. When the tournament kicked off, it was rather obvious that in the 1/4 of the final, Agassi [4] would meet Krajicek [5] – the former champion suffered his worst Wimbledon defeat in the 3rd round though, to Lorenzo Manta [196] in five sets, and the Swiss qualifier, who achieved his career-best result, didn’t withstand the pressure of defeating another Top 10 player, Kuerten [7]. The Brazilian had a large preparation for his ground-strokes off both wings, so it was tough for him to play on grass (still fast at the time), but he was a great server, and that year it helped him to notch the only good result on grass in his career. He was rather hopeless against Agassi, broken early in the first two sets. In the 3rd set he led 3:2* (40/30) and 40/0 at 4-all; he committed two double faults, allowing Agassi to serve the match out in the blink of an eye.
