Points won by each set: | 20-29, 45-41, 29-22, 37-30 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
36 % Becker – 51 of 139
26 % Jarryd – 30 of 114
A two-day encounter when they faced each other for the first time (ultimately Becker won that H2H 6-3). On Friday the 24-year-old Swede [6] was a much better player, proposing à la Borg tactics (attacking the net only behind the first serve), and the teenager barely avoided being two sets down in over an hour. Becker [20] saved the first set point at *4:5 with his first ace of the match, the second set point with a volley. In the tie-break Jarryd led *3:1 when lost six straight points, and at 1-all in the 3rd set the match was suspended due to rain. After the resumption on Saturday, Jarryd couldn’t get points quickly on serve, in the 4th set he lost his serve as many as four times (he broke Becker twice, pushing him to ‘deuces’ in two other games). Quite paradoxically when they play their last mutual match (also at Slams), Becker is one of the best players in the world, being in super form, yet the ageing Jarryd defeats him being out of form, considering retirement. Järryd’s only major semifinal in singles (in doubles he won 8 Grand Slams).
