  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 31-25, 48-41, 28-19 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    25 % Volkov – 26 of 103
    26 % Edberg – 24 of 89

Arguably the biggest upset of the ’90 season and most significant win in Volkov’s career. The Russian [52] was 23-year-old at the time, without an ATP title while one year older Edberg [1] was in a form of his life winning 21 matches in a row. Edberg suffered a similar destiny to Brad Gilbert a year before – the American was on a 17-match winning streak when beaten in the US Open ’89 first round by Todd Witsken who ousted Volkov (6-2, 6-2, 6-3) in the second round of the US Open 90! Volkov’s victory over Edberg is even more intriguing in retrospect because following that match, the Swede won back-to-back titles at the US Open… In the opening set Volkov withstood break points in two different games, and from 3-all he managed to win five straight games, surviving another break point game. Edberg came back from a break down, led 6:5* (40/30) when Volkov’s super solid backhand found the sideline. The Russian took the tie-break 7/3 and already had a mini-match point at 4:1 in the 3rd set. Edberg fought it off with an ace, but it was too late to recover.
