  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 32-28, 18-26, 39-37 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    17 % Yzaga – 15 of 86
    27 % Courier – 26 of 94

Arguably the biggest ‘best of three’ victory in Yzaga’s career. Rather paradoxical because they had met three times at the turn of the 80s/90s when Yzaga was an established player while Courier just a teenager gaining experience. Therefore in Sydney, when Courier was seeking points to finish the year as the best player in the word second consecutive year, not many could anticipate Yzaga’s win. Courier enjoyed playing Down Under, at the time he was a double Australian Open champion, nonetheless Yzaga began the quarterfinal in flying colors, leading 4:1 with a double break. In the 3rd set the Peruvian [54] was trying to be very aggressive, attacking the net a lot. It paid off; he saved a triple break point at 0:1 and two mini-match points at 3:4 (Courier made two errors from the baseline). Yzaga finished the contest before midnight with a forehand down the line winner. “It’s the best win of my career” he stated. The following day Yzaga stunned the defending champion Ivanisevic in under an hour, snapping his 10-match winning streak.

    Serve & volley: Yzaga 0, Courier 3/5
