   29-year-old Higueras [17], the best Spanish player of the late 70s, early 80s, after very lucky 3R win over Keretic, destroyed two Top 10 Americans in back-to-back matches (Teltscher, Connors), and began the match vs Vilas holding his serve. To win another service game he needed almost 80 minutes! He was trailing 0:2* in the 2nd set when decided to hit Vilas’ body as they both were close to the net – he missed but sent a message he’d be more aggressive (his normal baseline patience wasn’t good enough against physically stronger Vilas & Borg). In the 3rd set the Argentinian [4] led 5:3* (30/15), in the following game Higueras played his best tennis to break back and led 6:5 (30-all) as well as 3:1 in the tie-break – Vilas won the last six points finishing the match with an inside-out forehand winner. One year later they play on the same court in the quarterfinal, Higueras wins 3-2 after 4 hours 30 minutes.
