    Points won by each set: | 32-30, 25-12 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    36 % Haas – 19 of 52
    46 % Courier – 22 of 47

“I’m glad it came against a former No. 1. It makes it special,” said Haas [22] about his fist ATP title. It was achieved easier than anyone could expect after his three previous finals lost (once he had a championship point, Lyon ’98), but eight years older Courier [69] had to play one match more as unseeded, and already in the mid-1st set he signalized problems with his left foot, slightly sprained in the semifinal. Probably it was the reason he was serving much faster than usual, trying to avoid rallies. It was working well until *4:5 (40/0) – prior to that moment Haas almost couldn’t return Courier’s serve, but stole the set, and the 2nd set was a one-way traffic. Courier seemed like someone who could retire at any given moment.

Haas’ route to his maiden title (49th main-level event):
    2 Alex O’Brien 6-4, 6-4
    3 Ramon Delgado 7-6(2), 6-4
    Q Andrew Ilie 7-5, 3-6, 6-3
    S Todd Martin 6-3, 7-6(4)
    W Jim Courier 6-4, 6-1

    Serve & volley: Haas 0, Courier 0/2

Courier’s 36th and last final (23-13 record), one year later he decided to finish his career at the age of 30
