Points won by each set: | 32-20, 39-37 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
17 % Tsitsipas – 13 of 73
14 % Ruud – 8 of 55
[12] Tsitsipas’ third title in Monte Carlo in the past four editions (his only defeat comes from last year’s quarterfinal, 2-6 4-6 vs Fritz). Recently he dropped out of the Top 10 after a few years inside it, but comes back thanks to the event that must be called his ‘beloved’. The Greek admitted that his third triumph in Monaco tastes sweeter, during his two previous triumphs (2021 and 2022) he had to win five matches, this time six because he didn’t have ‘bye’ in round 1.
He had a clear plan what to do from the start against Ruud [10], so above all he wanted to display an offensive attitude. The first two failed serve-and-volley actions didn’t discourage him as well as two missed relatively easy overheads across both sets. In the 2nd set he fought off break points at 0:0, 1:1 and 3:3 to convert his first match point with a forehand winner. Immediately after it he fell on his back. “It has been very difficult, so to be back on the podiums, winning tournaments just feels amazing,” Tsitsipas said. “I can’t thank my family enough and friends, and if there is God out there, for making this moment possible. I am extremely grateful for every person behind this journey.” Ruud has now lost his all six big finals (3 Slams, 2 Masters 1K and “Masters”), never forcing a deciding set.
Tsitsipas’ route to his 11th title (3rd Masters 1K):
1 Laslo Djere 6-3, 3-2 ret.
2 Tomas M. Etcheverry 6-1, 6-0
3 Alexander Zverev 7-5, 7-6(3)
Q Karen Khachanov 6-4, 6-2
S Jannik Sinner 6-4, 3-6, 6-4
W Casper Ruud 6-1, 6-4
Serve & volley: Tsitsipas 7/10, Ruud 2/2
# Tsitsipas five points away to lose the semifinal: he saved two break points at 1:3 in 3rd set vs Sinner, at one of them he actually committed a double fault, but the linesman didn’t call ‘out’ the second serve, Sinner didn’t stop the play and lost the rally… later on there was 2:4, Sinner had a game point to lead 5:3; in the 2nd set of the third round match against Zverev, Tsitsipas already led 5:0*
