Points won by each set: | 32-23, 24-5 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
13 % Agassi – 6 of 43
12 % Wilander – 5 of 41
Wilander [102] hadn’t played professional tennis for almost two years – once he returned to the tour, he played three full seasons just for fun, and enjoyed two flashes of former brilliance in 1995 – first he advanced to the Key Biscayne quarterfinal (as a “wild card”), then to the Canadian Open semifinal, winning four consecutive matches in both cases. His semifinal against Agassi [1] was played on a windy day but it cannot be an excuse because during his glory days in 1988, Wilander was defeating almost everyone regardless of the outdoor conditions.
In the opening set he pushed Agassi to two ‘deuce’ games on serve of the American, but the 2nd set it was a one-way traffic. # They faced each other as many as four times in 1995 (every time on a hardcourt), Wilander was unable to win a set, well, in their first two ’95 meetings, he won just two games on each occasion. It was a sign of the times; nine years before during their first meeting when Agassi made his main-level debut, Wilander was already established as one of the best players, and he trashed the teenager 6-1, 6-1 (La Quinta). A few weeks after their meeting in Canada, they play another semifinal, this time in New Haven, Agassi wins 6-3, 6-3.
# Comparison of their two 1995 matches consisted of just 14 games: Indian Wells (2R): Agassi d. Wilander 6-0, 6-2… 58 minutes… Total points: 60-33 Montreal (SF): Agassi d. Wilander 6-2, 6-0… 56 minutes… Total points: 56-28
