Their second semifinal of 2004, and just like in their previous SF (Aus Open), Safin [9] took advantage of Agassi’s close-to-the-line return position, obtaining plenty of points directly behind the serves. The 34-year-old American [7] had an outlook to level at one set apiece twice: first as he led 4:3* (40/30) – Safin’s FH winner, then at 4:2* in the tie-break – Safin’s ace, and five straight points for him in total. “Its a long time since I’ve played as well as that – a really long time,” Safin said. “I knew Agassi would be a little tired after a long match yesterday, so I just concentrated on my serve. I’m really surprised I played so well from the baseline.” Agassi needed 2 hours 27 minutes to beat Robredo in the last quarterfinal.
