After the 3-hour 42-minute indoor duel, Safin snapped Agassi’s 26-match winning streak in Melbourne, even though prior to the semifinal Safin’s shortest match was longer than the longest Agassi had played! The American had two set points in the 1st set – 5:4* (adv.) – Safin’s backhand winner, *6:5 in the tie-break – backhand error; in the 2nd set he led 4:2* (40/30) when Safin hit the line with his forehand forcing an error. Agassi serving at 5:4 (30/0) lost four straight points and found himself at *5:6 (15/40), later on he had a set point at 6:5* in the tie-break – Safin produced a backhand winner! The decisive break of the match came with Safin leading 2:1 in the 5th set.
