Haarhuis [68], similarly to Hicham Arazi, won just one ATP title in his career, but advancement of them both to big finals (Arazi at Monte Carlo ’01) couldn’t be considered as shocking outcomes. For many years Haarhuis had been known as a dangerous player on every surface, especially facing much higher ranked, very good servers due to his exceptional return skills; he took advantage of it at Indian Wells eliminating Sampras & Ivanisevic before achieving his career-best result. In the final he played above his level until he led 4:2* (40/0) – then Chang [9] saved break points Nos. 2 & 3 with winners which landed in Haarhuis’ backhand corner. Those two balls turned the tables and from that moment to the end of the contest the Dutchman won only 3 games losing 17! Haarhuis interview after the match.

Chang’s route to his 24th title:
2 Stefan Edberg 4-6, 6-3, 6-1
3 Arnaud Boetsch 6-1, 6-3
Q Andre Agassi 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-1
S Marcelo Rios 7-6(6), 6-3
W Paul Haarhuis 7-5, 6-1, 6-1
