  1. Voo de Mar says:
Stats of the first two sets, 20 of 27 games included (74%)

    Points won by each set: | 32-25, 32-22, X |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    36 % Becker – 19 of 52
    35 % Gilbert – 21 of 59

Due to persistent rain, all four quarterfinals were played simultaneously, and it was a quite controversial decision from the officials to assign the finalists of the previous two editions, to the outside courts: Becker went to court no. 2 while Edberg to no. 14 (while Lendl played on Centre, and a young Ivanisevic on court no. 1). Both favourites didn’t disappoint and easily moved through to the semifinals. Becker [2], playing on this court for the first time since 1984 (!) when he sprained his ankle facing Scanlon, proposed a special tactics against Gilbert [6]. The American was a very difficult opponent for the German, who apparently drew conclusions upon his four defeats to Gilbert, and instead of the usual booming delivery, he was trying to keep high percentage of the 1st serve in (more than 70% throughout) which reflected in only once ace. Gilbert’s tiredness potentially contributed to the one-sided encounter as in the fourth round he survived the longest match at Wimbledon that year (4 hours 10 minutes) against Wheaton, so when he was broken in the opening game of the 3rd set, he had no hope to win his second match in succession from two-sets-to-love down.
