  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 26-32, 51-45, 50-48, 33-29 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    33 % McEnroe – 55 of 164
    23 % Borg – 35 of 150

It’s quite possible that McEnroe [2] was focused in that match like never before or after; despite his tempestuous character he tried to stay calm even when losing important rallies, like he knew that he’d defeat his toughest opponent on his beloved court, only playing with 100% commitment from the first to last point. [1] Borg led 4:1* in the 3rd set, then squandered four set points at 5:4 – in that game McEnroe stayed on the baseline behind the serve for the only time in the final (he did it after five deuces, won the game after six). The 25-year-old Borg lost his first match at Wimbledon after 41 consecutive wins & never appeared again the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, as a player. ”The match was very close,” Borg said after the match. ”It was important for me to win the third set. When I had four set points, on the important points, when he had to win them, he hit his first serve in.”

McEnroe’s route to his 31st title:
    1 Tom Gullikson 7-6(5), 7-5, 6-3
    2 Raul Ramirez 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3, 7-6(6)
    3 Bob Lutz 6-4, 6-2, 6-0
    4 Stan Smith 7-5, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2
    Q Johan Kriek 6-1, 7-5, 6-1
    S Rod Frawley 7-6(2), 6-4, 7-5
    W Bjorn Borg 4-6, 7-6(1), 7-6(4), 6-4
