  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 36-30, 25-8, 30-20 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    26 % Lendl – 18 of 69
    20 % Mayotte – 16 of 80

Very disappointing clash of two players approaching their 30s. Seven years before on the same court, Mayotte [10] almost defeated Lendl [1] in four sets but since then Lendl improved his backhand while Mayotte slowed down moving forwards as a serve-and-volleyer. In the consequence Lendl trashed Mayotte in their last four meetings and that night session quarterfinal initiated the streak. Their rivalry ended with 17-0 for Lendl (Mayotte was twice relatively close to win “best of five” matches), the most one-sided H2H given the best players of the 80s (below it: Lendl vs B.Gilbert 16-0). The American played well in the opener, but once he lost it, he couldn’t regain his motivation, and Lendl obtained 11 games in a row. Mayotte had his only break points in Lendl’s last two service games. Actually it was the end of Mayotte in the Top 10. The following year he barely stayed inside the Top 50 being unable to win a Grand Slam match in three attempts, two years later he dropped outside the Top 100 and it led him to retirement.
