  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 23-29, 55-44, 25-9, 33-27 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    16 % Wilander – 17 of 102
    19 % Sanchez – 28 of 143

    # Déjà vu – a few months before they met in the French Open quarterfinal; in New York just like in Paris, Sanchez [21] was one point away to lead 2-0 in sets, but lost the match in four. Strangely, these two are the only major quarterfinals in Sanchez’s career, a poor achievement for someone with double digit of titles, and three “Masters 1K” finals (one of them successful).
During their New York meeting, they both applied the same proactive strategy in service games – if not directly behind the first serve, they were attacking the net with approach shots. Sanchez took the opening three games, and for almost two hours he didn’t lose his serve – when he finally did, he was broken six times in a row! In the pivotal 2nd set, Wilander [2] wasted six set points at 5:4 (he should have converted the first one hitting a smash from a rather comfortable position), and faced a set point at *5:6 in the breaker, but survived a 14-stroke rally, and dominated his opponent afterwards. Sanchez seemed disheartened after the 2nd set, not believing that the final outcome would be different than in Paris. Wilander already led 5:1* in the 4th set when Sanchez – in a “I don’t care” mood – accelerated his shots which allowed him to win three successive games.

    Serve & volley: Wilander 16/20, Sanchez 15/27

    # Comparison of their two Slam quarterfinals:
    French Open ’88: Wilander d. Sanchez 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-4… 4 hours 0 minutes… Total points:
    US Open ’88: Wilander d. Sanchez 3-6, 7-6, 6-0, 6-4… 2 hours 48 minutes… Total points: 136-109
