   Gilbert [15] played only two Slam quarterfinals in his long career, very little for someone who reached no. 4 and collected 20 titles. The first quarterfinal when he was already 26 (after sensational victory over Becker), seemed an open issue, because Gilbert’s three previous meetings against 9 years older Connors were quite balanced (one of them Gilbert finished victorious, Memphis ’86). Crucial for their New York encounter was game no. 7 of the 3rd set – there were six deuces, Gilbert was broken, and his concentrated evaporated. In the 4th, bagel set played entirely under the floodlights, Connors [6] fought off break points in two different games.
