  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 49-44, 32-20, 33-21 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    26 % Lendl – 25 of 94
    26 % Edberg – 28 of 105

A big disappointment in a clash of the ranking leader and his potential dethroner. There was 2:2 in their H2H at the time, two previous encounters went to the fifth sets (they shared the wins), Edberg couldn’t complain on tiredness after an easy quarterfinal victory. Each of them had a break point in the opener, in the tie-break [4] Edberg improved from *2:5 to 6-all, but made a volley error off [1] Lendl’s aggressive BH return, and the Czechoslovak prevailed 8/6. It somewhat discouraged the young Swede, who was unable to play winning volleys as a receiver in his first hardcourt semifinal at majors, Lendl’s ground-strokes were too methodical & it was very tough to attack him with good approach-shots. Edberg finally got a break point at 2:4 in the 3rd set, but it was too late to shift the momentum. Five years later they play on the same court similarly one-sided encounter, but that time Edberg is at his peak form while the ageing Lendl is tired after three very tough from the mental standpoint, three-and-a-half-hour matches against great servers (Krajicek, Ivanisevic, Stich).

    # Comparison of their US Open semifinals:
    1986: Lendl d. Edberg 7-6, 6-2, 6-3… 2 hours 28 minutes… Total points: 114-85… Breaks: 3-0
    1991: Edberg d. Lendl 6-3, 6-3, 6-4… 2 hours 9 minutes… Total points: 94-73… Breaks: 6-2
