  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 36-27, 38-29, 30-21 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    30 % Connors – 24 of 80
    25 % Scanlon – 25 of 101

Scanlon [17] belonged to the best serves at the turn of 70s and 80s, but in that semifinal (his first and last at Slams) the serve deserted him (below 40% of first serve in). He was also playing quite poorly as a receiver, and Connors [3] obtained much more cheap points than usually. The defending champion wasted four break points at 4:1 in the 2nd set, and faced the first break point leading 5:3. It was the only moment in that match when Scanlon was animated, eager to fight. En route to the semifinal he had defeated in the fourth round [1] John McEnroe 7-6, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 which may be regarded as the biggest win of his life. Scanlon is the last man to play the US Open semifinal with a fully wooden racquet (Cash played with a wood/graphite composite the following year as well as Mecir three years later). Connors never lost to Scanlon in seven meetings, it was their match no. 6.
