    Points won by each set: | 31-18, 21-28, 25-13, 35-30 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    37 % Alcaraz – 33 of 89
    25 % Sinner – 28 of 112

Even though the last quarter of season lies ahead, that final had a vibe “who wins it, will finish the year as no. 1”. Admittedly they have shared two Slam titles in 2025 like a year before (unprecedented in tennis history), but Alcaraz has collected significantly more points in Masters 1K events this year. There will be three big tournaments in Autumn (Shanghai, Paris, Turin), but it’s highly unlikely that Sinner wins them all while Alcaraz will be losing in the early rounds. He has an advantage of 760 points now.
Due to rain the final was held indoors, and delayed by 40 minutes because of Donald Trump joined the attendance. Alcaraz [2] began the match in crazy intensity which is understandable given his easy route to the final as well as his 3-0 record against Sinner in five-setters. He badly wanted to lead 2:0 in sets against Sinner [1] for the first time, but failed – he didn’t convert a break point in the first game of the 2nd set and got broken at 1:2 at love (Sinner played one of his best points to lead 30/0 in that game). It was quite shocking that the Spaniard raced to a 5:0* lead in the 3rd on Sinner’s favorite surface, the Spaniard was simply too fast for the Italian with his ground-strokes & powerful serving. Admittedly Alcaraz hadn’t hit a backhand winner until the second game of the 4th set (in that game he notched his all three BH winners), but it doesn’t mean he was struggling with this shot. The crucial moment of the final came at 2-all (15/0) for Sinner – he lost a point he should have won at the net, Alcaraz broke in that game and being focused on holding, served out the championship on his third match point (one deuce required), finishing with an identical serve as he became the US Open champion for the first time three years ago – then the ball went to the stands after Ruud’s frame, this time Sinner barely touched the ball. “My team, my family, I am really lucky to have you guys, to be honest,” said Alcaraz at the trophy presentation. “The hard work you do to make me even better, not only in the professional part, but the personal part as well. Every achievement that I am [making] is thanks to you, and this one is no less, it’s also yours.”

Alcaraz’s route to his 23rd title:
    1 Reilly Opelka 6-4, 7-5, 6-4
    2 Mattia Bellucci 6-1, 6-0, 6-3
    3 Luciano Darderi 6-2, 6-4, 6-0
    4 Arthur Rinderknech 7-6(3), 6-3, 6-4
    Q Jiri Lehecka 6-4, 6-2, 6-4
    S Novak Djokovic 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-2
    W Jannik Sinner 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4

    Serve & volley: Alcaraz 4/4, Sinner 1/1

    ☆ Alcaraz joined Lendl (1987) & Nadal (2013) as the third man to clinch the US Open title dropping a set only in the final;
he was broken just thrice in the fortnight (record belongs to Sampras – broken twice at Wimbledon ’97)

☆☆ Players with the most wins in Bo5 tournaments in a season:

    32 – Wilander (1988) *
    30 – Lendl (1987) *
    27 – Federer (2006), Djokovic (2015, 2021, 2023)
    26 – Laver (1969) **
    25 – Nadal (2010), Sinner (2025)
    24 – Alcaraz (2025)
    23 – Murray (2016)
    22 – Becker (1989)
    21 – Sampras (1994)

    * Wilander & Lendl won the most because apart from majors they collected many wins at Key Biscayne (the “fifth” Slam in the years 1987-89)
** Laver won four Slams in 1969 as the only man in the Open Era thus far, but only five matches at the Aussie Open (as many as required then)

At this stats, I think is worth mentioning why no-one from the 70s – simply the Austalian Open had a lower status than the Italian Open at the time,
hence the icons of that period (Borg, Connors, J.McEnroe) didn’t care about Melbourne
