  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 33-24, 23-28, 41-40, 26-15 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    28 % Shelton – 31 of 108
    27 % Tiafoe – 33 of 122

Their first meeting, and the first all-American clash in the US Open quarterfinal since 2005 when Agassi defeated Blake. After the first two lopsided sets, the third one was balanced. There were six breaks of serve before the tie-break in which Shelton [47] led 6:4*, but committed two double faults in a row (not risking his second serves) and faced a set point at 6:7. It was a crucial moment of the match, Shelton responded to Tiafoe’s [10] second serve down the T, with a perfect forehand return inside-out which landed in the corner. The much lower ranked, and four years younger Shelton took the breaker 9/7, and never looked back in the 4th set. He finished the contest with a forehand winner, and celebrated with a hand-gesture signalizing a phone-call. “So our home phone, when I was growing up in Atlanta, was one like that,” explained the 20-year-old star. “If I wanted to talk to my friends or call their home phone, see if they wanted to go outside and throw a football, that’s what I did.”

    Serve & volley: Shelton 0, Tiafoe 0/1
