  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 29-37, 46-46, 18-27, 29-19, 32-25 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    17 % Youzhny – 25 of 144
    28 % Wawrinka – 47 of 164

Players with a similar skill set (main differences: Wawrinka – harder server, Youzhny – smoother mover), and the 3 years older Russian prevailed after exactly 4 hours, advancing for the second time to the US Open semifinal. In the pivotal 2nd set, Wawrinka [27] was hypothetically two points away from winning the match in straight sets, but Youzhny [14] converted his fourth set point to win the tie-break 9/7 (earlier at 4-all he fought off a mini-set point). Sets 3 and 4 were actually identical in their progress, one break in each set (at ‘love’) decided at 1:0 – apart from the breaks, all other games were won easily by the serving players. The decider was played under the floodlights, it turned into a physical battle as both guys were physically struggling, both needed medical time-outs (Youzhny to his right foot, Wawrinka to his left thigh). The longer the match the longer rallies, and Youzhny adapted to windy conditions better – he broke thrice, lost his serve once. At the time it seemed Wawrinka lost his lifetime opportunity to reach a major semifinal because it was his first quarterfinal at this level at age of 25. Nevertheless four years later he sensationally triumphed in Australia, and added two more Slam titles to his resume.
In the photo Youzhny with his signature “colonel” gesture. Wawrinka made his breakthrough tournament under the Peter Lundgren’s guidance – the Swedish former player (b. 1965) died when I was preparing this stats…

    Serve & volley: Youzhny 1/1, Wawrinka 1/3
