  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 32-36, 29-15, 32-20 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    25 % Edberg – 21 of 81
    24 % McEnroe – 20 of 83

The 21-year-old Edberg [3] had already beaten the best players of the early 80s (Lendl, Connors, Wilander), but he couldn’t have played well against McEnroe… until the Rotterdam encounter. Entering the 1987 final in the Netherlands, the young Swede had a miserable 0:5 H2H record against ‘BigMac’, losing all 11 sets they’d played. McEnroe [11] twisted his ankle in the opening game of the 3rd set, and lost six straight games. The final lasted 2 hours 4 minutes. “It took a long time” Edberg said “I’ve never even been close. He was tearing my game apart”.

Edberg’s route to his 11th title:
    1 Stanislav Birner 6-1, 6-2
    2 Andreas Maurer 6-0, 6-0
    Q Anders Jarryd 6-3, 6-7, 6-4
    S Jimmy Grabb 6-3, 6-4
    W John McEnroe 3-6, 6-3, 6-1
