It was an end of some period – the time of emphatic Jim Courier‘s dominance. The American at the time was an undisputed king of clay, who had won the last four biggest tournaments on this surface (Roland Garros 1991-92 & Rome 1992-93), En route to the French Open final ’93, he didn’t impress but not too many pundits could expect his dethronization from hands of Sergi Bruguera, whom Courier had beaten on four previous occasions not dropping a set even once.
