Points won by each set: [ 35-27, 25-12, 30-21 ]
Points won directly behind the serve:
14 % Muster – 11 of 74
10 % Krickstein – 8 of 76
Two 25-year-old players (Krickstein exactly two months older), former Top 10ers, but during the MC week Muster was No. 37 while Krickstein No. 24, so their first match in six years (the American won the first one 2-6, 6-1, 7-5 in Basel ’86) was absolutely unexpected when the event kicked off. The Austrian had difficult route to the final, but in his sixth match of the week he delivered magnificent tennis, Krickstein didn’t lead in any of sets. Muster explained that he needed massages before the final about Krickstein’s stellar five-set record (it was 21-7 then, Muster had 9-5); he thought had no chance in a five-setter against the “marathon man”, thanks to that he was focused on giving his best from the start, played without any pressure, and it worked fantastically.
Muster’s route to his 11th title:
1 Henri Leconte 3-6, 6-4, 6-3
2 Alexander Volkov 6-2, 4-6, 6-1
3 Guy Forget 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3
Q Mikael Tillstrom 6-3, 4-6, 6-3
S Arnaud Boetsch 7-5, 6-4
W Aaron Krickstein 6-3, 6-1, 6-3
