  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 33-22, 45-34 |
    Points won directly behind the serve:
    49 % Rosset – 31 of 63
    38 % Siemerink – 27 of 71

    A serve-and-volley contest between 23-year-old players, occupying similar positions in the ATP ranking [44 and 50] which gave them seeded with Nos. 6 and 8. Rosset broke in the opening game with the help of three backhands while it was usually his much weaker wing; another break he obtained in the consequence of Siemerink’s poor display at the net. In the 2nd set Rosset held six times comfortably (dropped just two points on serve in that set), and confirmed his superiority in the tie-break. It was the inaugural edition of the Open 13, Rosset would defend his title the following year defeating Boetsch in the final. His clash against Siemerink was preceded by a minute of silence because a day before the Wimbledon ’75 champion Arthur Ashe passed away due to AIDS at the age of 49 (he’d contracted HIV from blood transfusions during heart surgery a decade earlier).

    Rosset’s route to his 5th title:
    1 Stephane Simian 7-6(9), 6-7(3), 7-6(3) ☆
    2 Henri Leconte 6-4, 6-4
    Q Rodolphe Gilbert 6-4, 6-4
    S Jakob Hlasek 6-2, 6-4
    W Jan Siemerink 6-2, 7-6(1)

    ☆ Rosset defeated four left-handers, each of them with one-handed BH;
    only two breaks of serve in the almost three-hour match against Simian
