The photo at changeovers is probably the first tennis photo I’ve seen in my life.
Points won by each set: | 28-14, 29-16, 44-44, 34-27 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
34 % Ashe – 36 of 105
19 % Connors – 26 of 131
The first all-American final at Wimbledon since 1947. Connors saved mini-MP at 5-all in the 3rd set & led 3:0* in the 4th. Ashe [8] was 32 when he won the biggest title of his career (it was his third major, following US Open ’68 and Australian Open ’70). Amazing that one year before, Connors won the two opening sets of the Wimbledon final ‘6-1’. Twelve years after the Ashe final, Connors finds himself again at ‘1-6, 1-6, 7-5…’ but that time he prevails.
Ashe’s route to his lone major title:
1 Bob Hewitt 7-5, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4
2 Jun Kamiwazumi 6-2, 7-5, 6-4
3 Brian Gottfried 6-2, 6-3, 6-1
4 Graham Stilwell 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2
Q Bjorn Borg 2-6, 6-4, 8-6, 6-1
S Tony Roche 5-7, 6-4, 7-5, 8-9(4), 6-4
W Jimmy Connors 6-1, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4
