Points won by each set: | 32-37, 43-40, 11/9 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
25 % Federer – 20 of 79
26 % Kyrgios – 25 of 93
The first edition of an experimental new team event on a slow, abrasive indoor court with dark grey color, gathering the best players on the planet, within a weekend (Friday each match worth 1 point, Saturday – 2 points, Sunday – 3 points) & creating a unique opportunity to see them teamed up in doubles. Six against six, each player has to step at least once for a singles match while a player in doubles may enter the court thrice on the assumption he does it each time with a different partner (Sock used this option in the first edition)…
In a deciding match, Federer [2] fought off a match point in the super tie-break to give “Team Europe” (led by Bjorn Borg/Thomas Enqvist, in blue shirts) the first victory over “Team World” (players from North America & Australia this time, in red shirts) which was led by John McEnroe/Patrick McEnroe. Federer trailed *5:8 in the super tie-break, Kyrgios [20] finished the match in tears despite quasi exhibition atmosphere. “I was ready to go. I had to be. That is what a team member does. The boys played fantastic all weekend but we knew it could change very quickly on Sunday,” Federer said. “I was looking at getting ready maybe for doubles at the end… But I got it done.” Europe succeeded 15-9 in the end, but if Kyrgios had won the match, at 12:12 a doubles tie-break set would have decided the final outcome.
