Times when the almost 20-year-old Del Potro [24] underwent a sudden metamorphosis, and with a modest 9-8 record for the season, won four events in a row – Los Angeles was the third in the streak; after two clay-court titles he showed that he’d be dangerous on hardcourts as well. Roddick [9] began the final in a poor form, trailing 1:4* he took a medical time-out (lower back), he improved afterwards, but to the end of the final he was not able to create any chances in Del Potro’s service games, only got ‘deuce’ once, at 4-all in the 2nd set. “I think it’s my biggest victory,” the champion said. “The first set, he played lights out,” said Roddick. “He’s playing well. No doubt he’s got a lot of talent. His forehand is huge. It will be interesting to see how he does. He certainly has the weapons; it depends on how he builds on it.” After Los Angeles, DelPo triumphed in Washington, in the meantime he had a streak of 28 sets won in a row!
