In the final he lost to Albert Costa after one of the shortest five-setters considering the Open Era finals (just 2:41 hours). Julian Alonso [48] was one of the most promising young players in the years 1997-98. He didn’t play typical Spanish tennis of the 80s & 90s, his serve was huge (fourth fastest serve at the time) & the forehand powerful, but the game very inconsistent overall. Shortly after the defeat to Gaudenzi (against whom he played the most professional matches – six), Alonso lost his status of main-level player, returned to the Challenger circuit and prematurely finished his career at the age of 24…
