  1. Voo de Mar says:
Points won directly behind the serve:
    31 % Gaudenzi – 30 of 94
    22 % Alonso – 24 of 108

    17 % Gaudenzi – 12 of 67
    14 % Clavet – 10 of 68

One of 9 tournaments in which Gaudenzi [36] reached the final, chronologically it was the seventh. In the final he lost to Albert Costa after one of the shortest five-setters considering the Open Era finals (just 2:41 hours). Julian Alonso [48] was one of the most promising young players in the years 1997-98. He didn’t play typical Spanish tennis of the 80s & 90s, his serve was huge (fourth fastest serve at the time) & the forehand powerful, but the game very inconsistent overall. Shortly after the defeat to Gaudenzi (against whom he played the most professional matches – six), Alonso lost his status of main-level player, returned to the Challenger circuit and prematurely finished his career at the age of 24…

Gaudenzi’s road at the Generali Open ’98 to the final:
    2 Rehmann 7-6(7), 6-2
    3 Alonso 5-7, 6-2, 6-4
    Q Lapentti 6-3, 7-6(5)
    S Clavet 6-2, 2-6, 6-2
    F A.Costa 2-6, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3, 1-6
