  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 46-52, 26-16, 29-18 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    34 % Courier – 32 of 94
    21 % Steeb – 20 of 93

Steeb [38], as a double Davis Cup champion (mainly thanks to Boris Becker) & a Top 20 player in the late 80s, could expect to reach a major quarterfinal & Mercedes Super 9 semifinal in the 90s – he failed on the first task (4th round was his best), but in a new prestigious series of events, he managed to play a semifinal, and displayed very good tennis in the opener against the world’s best at the time. Courier led *2:0 after two long opening games, 5:4, but at 5-all Steeb passed him three times in a row, the third time on break point when the ball allegedly caught the line which wasn’t accepted by Courier. At 6:5 the German withstood four break points, including a double BP with two FH volley winners. Courier saved a break point in the first game of the 2nd set and firmly controlled the rest of the match. Steeb, who took a 7-minute toilet break before the decider, had a break point at 1:2 and played an aggressive forehand down the line to finish a demanding rally: he netted, dropped his baseball cap and lost his belief then. In the last few games he played poorly at the net and had big problems to return Courier’s second serves.

    Serve & volley: Courier 1/5, Steeb 5/13
