Points won by each set: | 30-27, 37-30, 32-21 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
36 % Corretja – 28 of 77
22 % Enqvist – 22 of 100
The IW 2000 edition featured the expansion of the draw from 56 to 64 and the surface modification: GreenSet was replaced by a much slower & gritty PlexiPave. The new surface certainly helped Corretja [26] who came to California in a poor form comparing to his brilliant 1998 season. The Catalan belonged to a group of players producing the biggest topspins, thus a high bouncing surface was a match to his game-style. In the 1st set of the final Corretja outplayed Enqvist [10] in baseline duels of two 26-year-old players. The Swede changed his tactics at the beginning of the next set, attacking the net a lot, but it was quite weird given his very average net skills. The outcome of the set was the same despite a different pace of rallies. Enqvist raced to a *2:0 lead in the last set, but Corretja gathered four games in succession. Enqvist committed a double fault trying to save a second match point. Longer games were the key to that final, there were six “deuce” games (3-2-1 respectively by sets) and Corretja won them all. It was his sixth and last final at this “Masters Series” level (record 2-4).
Corretja’s route to his 10th title:
1 Karol Kucera 6-2, 6-2
2 Patrick Rafter 7-6(3), 5-7, 6-2
3 Fabrice Santoro 7-6(6), 6-1
Q Magnus Norman 4-6, 6-2, 6-2
S Nicolas Lapentti 6-3, 6-4
W Thomas Enqvist 6-4, 6-4, 6-3
