   The biggest win in Denton’s career. He led *4:2 and wasted four set points returning at 5:4 – on the first set point BigMac [1] was lobbed but recovered to finish the rally with a forehand passing-shot. Denton [21] won the tie-break 8/6 on his sixth set point and broke at 4-all in the 2nd set. It was their first meeting, in the next six Denton didn’t even win a set.

   The 26-year-old Denton – one of the hardest servers in the early 80s – was known as a good doubles player partnering Kevin Curren, but his singles ranking oscillated around the Top 100. In the years 1981-82 he managed to drop 11 kilograms (25 pounds) and much better movement allowed him to enjoy 12 impressive months highlighted by three big finals (Australian Open twice – the major without best players then; and Cincinnati) that elevated him to No. 12 – to this day he’s the only two-time Grand Slam runner-up and highest ranked player without a main-level title…
