‘El Vampriro’ vs ‘El Gordo’ – one of the biggest comebacks in the ATP finals given the “best of three” format. Both South Americans were seeking their maiden ATP title; for the 23-year-old Massu [90] it was his third final attempt while three years older, late-bloomer Calleri [74] participated in an ATP final for the first time (he had played eight Challenger finals). The Argentinian, being supported by the local crowd, was in the zone, especially between *3:2 in 1st and 4:0* in 2nd set – he won seven straight games easily while Massu was signalising problems with his wrist, it seemed impossible that the Chilean would finish the event as a champion. He trailed *1:5 (0/15) in the 2nd set, at 2:5 (15-all) he hit his first forehand winner. Calleri became tighter, nevertheless at 5:3* (40/15) he had a double match point – Massu responded with a service winner and an aggressive forehand which caused Calleri’s error. In the tie-break there was 5-all when Calleri netted an overhead from a relatively good position to finish the point. As he lost the 2nd set, his body language completely changed. Admittedly he began the decider decently, leading 1:0* (30/0), but Massu had a game point to lead 5:1. Calleri broke after the longest game of the final, the Argentinians in the stands regained the belief in his success, but in vain – another two games went to Massu, and he celebrated an amazing victory on his back #. It was their first meeting, their rivalry ultimately won Calleri 6-2, but he experienced another bitter defeat from Massu’s hands, four years later at Indian Wells: Massu survived 6-1, 5-7, 7-6(10) withstanding five match points – he began his comeback from *2:5 in the decider.
Massu’s route to his maiden title (56th main-level event):
1 Gaston Etlis 6-1, 6-4
2 David Sanchez 6-4, 6-3
Q David Nalbandian 7-6(2), 4-6, 7-6(2)
S Feliciano Lopez 7-6(2), 6-2
W Agustin Calleri 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-2 – 2 m.p.
# A few days later, Massu lost to Chela 6-2, 6-7(10), 4-6 in the Acapulco second round, this time the Chilean suffered a loss squandering two match points in the second set
