  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 34-16, 31-39, 35-32 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    28 % Hewitt – 29 of 101
    40 % Federer – 35 of 86

The 27th (the first one in three years) and last meeting between the two best players born in 1981. It all started when they both were teenagers in 1999 with Hewitt’s victory in Lyon 7-6, 2-6, 6-4 after 2 hours 11 minutes; their last match was 4 minutes shorter. Even though Hewitt began and finished as a victor, he lost the rivalry 9-18…
He was ranked no. 60 in Brisbane while Federer was still among the elite players, no. 5, so it was an unexpected result. The Swiss entered the final in a lethargic state with many uncharacteristic errors. In the 2nd set he saved a break point at 3:4 with a smash. In the decider Hewitt was able to win three games when Federer created break chances, and a break at 2:1 proved to be decisive. Following that triumph, Hewitt won an exho match against Andy Murray 7-6, 7-6 at Kooyong, and his fans believed in resurgence of his career. Soon it was brutally verified in the Aussie Open first round as he lost to Andrea Seppi squandering a match point in the 5th set; what’s very bizarre, among Hewitt’s nine MP-up defeats, as many as three came from the hands of Seppi!

Hewitt’s route to his 29th title:
    1 Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-3, 7-5
    2 Feliciano Lopez 7-5, 6-3
    Q Marius Copil 6-4, 6-2
    S Kei Nishikori 5-7, 6-4, 6-3
    W Roger Federer 6-1, 4-6, 6-3

    # Hewitt fought off a double mini-match point at 4-all in 2nd vs Nishikori

    Serve & volley: Hewitt 0, Federer 0/1
