Night session match (finished at 1:16 a.m.), due to bad weather played indoors, between former and soon-to-be Nos. 1. They both entered the court in the same Nike clothes (red shirts, black shorts), but after the third set Moya changed his shirt to a lighter color (photo). Australian Open ’01 it was the first major event when the almost 20-year-old Hewitt [7] was considered as one of the favorites to the title because in the last quarter of the previous season he reached the US Open semifinal and his first Masters 1K final (Stuttgart), and helped Australians in advancement to the Davis Cup final. The draw was very tough though because in the first round Hewitt faced Bjorkman (a Top 10er a few years before), in the second round Haas, regarded as potentially one of the most successful player of the new decade. Hewitt needed more than 3 hours to beat each of them, and another three-hour match proved to be to much demanding. Moya [42] was lucky nevertheless, in the decider he couldn’t win a point as a receiver until 3-all (0/30) and at 4:5 (15/30) his forehand caught the external edge of the sideline. At 5-all occurred the longest game of the match, Moya broke after 5 deuces as Hewitt committed a double fault risking his second serve. The Spaniard served it out at love playing great drop-volley in the end and enjoyed that victory a lot.

    Serve & volley: Moya 5/7, Hewitt 1/3
