  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 41-49, 34-23, 44-36, 35-31 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    18 % Agassi – 25 of 136
    31 % Chesnokov – 50 of 157

Arguably the most anticipated first round match at Wimbledon ’92 because created a unique opportunity for spectators to witness a duel of top players (Agassi an elite player, Chesnokov – “1st league” according to my informal terminology) with neither of them interested to attack the net behind the serve on a regular basis – Wimbledon’s rarity in the 80s and 90s. Agassi [14] had enjoyed a very promising Wimbledon ’91 after skipping this event a few times, playing five good matches against serve-and-volleyers, thus his win over Chesnokov [31] wasn’t obvious given the style of the Russian who had been known as a counter-puncher – it forced Agassi to approaching the net more frequently than in his other Wimbledon matches in the 90s, and he initially didn’t feel himself comfortably. Yet at 1-all in the 2nd set he fought off two break points, and imposed his pace afterwards. In sets 3 and 4 he came back from a break down (1:3 and 0:2 respectively), serving to stay in the sets at 4:5 – in the 4th set there was 15/30 from his perspective in the tenth game… Agassi and Chesnokov spent a decade together on the tour, but that match on Court no. 1 remained their lone confrontation.

    Serve & volley: Agassi 13/23, Chesnokov 3/8
