   Points won directly behind the serve:
   34 % Edberg – 30 of 87
   37 % McEnroe – 33 of 88

   Three-time Wimbledon champion McEnroe [17] against two-time champion Edberg [1] – the former was the best serve-and-volleyer of the 80s, the latter the best S/Ver of the 90s, so on paper a match-up of epic proportions, but everything evaporated already after a long 1st set – the following two sets were actually of the same length. In the 2nd set McEnroe seemed totally discouraged, he lost three straight games not being able to win a point. The 3rd set he began leading 3:0, but Edberg managed to win five games in a row. The Swede won as many as 8 games at love on serve (out of 15) in that fourth round encounter. He had also defeated McEnroe 3-0 on the same court two years before in the semifinal, but after a super tight three-setter.

   a year before in the other 4th round clash of two former Wimbledon champions, Becker defeated Cash after the same scoreline
