  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 34-25, 27-11, 39-31 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    37 % McEnroe – 33 of 89
    21 % Mayotte – 17 of 78

Even though McEnroe [1] is only one year older than Mayotte [39], the difference in experience of these Americans was huge. That ’82 semifinal meant a first match at this stage for Mayotte who was 21 at the time while McEnroe had played his first Wimbledon semifinal at 18, and he faced his compatriot as a two-time successive finalist (and the defending champion). The underdog looked well for ~50 minutes, McEnroe needed six break points to break him at 2:1 in the opener, as he led *2:1 in the 2nd set Mayotte created a double break point, but failed, and lost seven games in a row. He was visibly tired, it was not only a matter of losing six sets before the semifinals (McEnroe dropped just one), that edition suffered many rain interruptions and Mayotte played a five-setter a day before while for McEnroe it was a day off. Nonetheless Mayotte tried his best in the 3rd set, but squandered seven break points in two different games with a few poor returns off McEnroe’s second serves.
