Just for the second time in the Open Era (previously 30 years before in Melbourne), a major semifinal wasn’t played due to injury of a player – Nadal [4] withdrew due to abdominal tear from an intriguing confrontation against Kyrgios [40] – they had faced each other twice at Wimbledon (2014, 2019), and both matches were concluded after tight 4-setters with shared victories. “I can’t serve. Is not only that I can’t serve at the right speed, it’s that I can’t do the normal movement to serve,” said Nadal. “As I always said: for me the most important thing is happiness more than any title, even if everybody knows how much effort I put to be here.” It was the last time when Nadal played in the second week of a major. At the age of 36 he reached his physical limits as a professional athlete. He’d only play three more majors afterwards: US Open ’22 (fourth round), Australian Open ’23 (second round) and French Open ’24 (first round).
