Points won by each set: | 25-11, 44-40, 31-22 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
24 % Dimitrov – 22 of 91
21 % Murray – 18 of 82
Potentially the best match in Dimitrov’s career as far as majors are concerned. Murray [5] – as a Wimbledon ’12 runner-up and 2013 champion – was expected to reach the semifinals at least (there he would face Djokovic whom had defeated in the final a year before). Dimitrov [13] was enjoying the best period of his tennis life in 2014, he had defeated Murray in their previous meeting after a dramatic encounter, so he entered Centre Court with self-confidence. It was quite shocking that after an hour of play he led 6-1, *4:3 (40/30) – then Murray finally broke and led 5:4 (30-all) – Dimitrov got two points with authority being two points away from losing the set. In the tie-break at 4-all, he played his first backhand winner (passing-shot cross-court), then on serve he attacked the net twice, and backhand volleys gave him both crucial points. There was 2-all (deuce) in the 3rd set when the Bulgarian collected four straight games eliminating the local favorite quicker than anyone could have expected. Generally speaking Dimitrov found a perfect balance of backhand top spins/slices, he was sliding in defence like on a clay court, at the net he was impeccable, especially his drive-volleys were excellent – he hit around 20 balls in the air, not making any mistake… Despite a big difference in their achievements, they rivalry is finished at only 8-5 for the Scot.
