Points won by each set: | 24-33, 28-14, 19:14… |
Points won directly behind the serve:
36 % Nadal – 20 of 55
32 % Djokovic – 25 of 77
[5] Djokovic’s Wimbledon route from the third round to the semifinal was extraordinary: against very good grass-court players he won two four-setters and a five-setter, playing three tie-breaks on each occasion. The 20-year-old Serb was fully aware that another marathon facing a fitter opponent would be impossible, hence he entered court no. 1 with a clear idea of hitting his 1st and 2nd serves faster than usual, the same applying to his ground-strokes to avoid any longer rallies. It was working for 50 minutes more or less. After he dropped his serve at the beginning of the 2nd set (Nadal’s smash which pumped him up) it looked like he was feeling pain in his whole body after each stroke. Being broken for the second time in the 3rd set, he took a medical time-out, and after a consultation with the trainer, he decided to retire – it was his second retirement against Nadal [2] in their sixth meeting.
