    Points won by each set: | 31-21, 34-24 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    35 % Corretja – 21 of 60
    10 % Agassi – 5 of 50

It was a quite shocking scoreline as Centre Court in Washington was one of [1] Agassi’s favorites. He triumphed there five times (1990-91, 1995, 1998-99). Entering the final against Corretja [8], he had won 28 sets in a row in the US capital, being forced to play just one tie-break out there. Initially it seemed he was on his way to notch his 15th consecutive victory in Washington, but wasted two break points at 2-all, and the match slipped away from him. He broke to begin the 2nd set, but lost his serve immediately, then he destroyed his racquet furiously hitting the sole of his shoe twice! Trailing *2:5 he broke another racquet, that time hitting the net-post. “It was not a good day for me. I’m sorry for… breaking a couple of rackets,” said Agassi. “I was just really upset because I wasn’t executing when the shot was there and I was trying to do something special when the shot wasn’t.” His serve deserted him above all, just one point he obtained directly behind the serve in the first four service games. Corretja summed up the 71-minute contest: “Of course Andre didn’t play his best tennis, but it is always the same when one guy plays well the other is difficult to get through,” The Spaniard had defeated the American in a hardcourt final (Indianapolis) already two years before, also winning sets “6-2, 6-3” (81 minutes) but that time after losing the opener. Corretja was in a form of his life in Summer ’00 capturing three titles in four events, and helping Spain to eliminate the United States in the Davis Cup semifinal.

Corretja’s route to his 13th title:
    2 Kevin Kim 7-5, 6-3
    3 Paradorn Srichaphan 6-3, 6-1
    Q Wayne Arthurs 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-3
    S Nicolas Kiefer 7-6(2), 6-2
    W Andre Agassi 6-2, 6-3

    Serve & volley: Corretja 3/3, Agassi 0/1
