    Points won by each set: | 34-32, 26-14, 30-17 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    40 % Martin – 34 of 83
    24 % Pioline – 17 of 70

Martin [7] began the match holding after six deuces (four break points saved), and led 4:1, but Pioline [26] broke back in the 9th game. At 30/40 in the following game, he hit a ‘forehand winner’ to save the set point, but the linesman called the ball out (it was halfway good) – six years before the Hawk-Eye system introduction, Pioline couldn’t change that decision. His meltdown in the next two sets was absolutely unexpected because they both were veterans with very tough matches preceding their semifinal (each of them had dropped 6 sets). Martin’s great service disposal certainly helped, generally he was a Top 10 server of the 90s, but in that semifinal he was serving like a Top 5 server. During the another US Open edition, Martin defeated Pioline 7-6, 6-3, 6-2 on the same court in the third round after a two-day match (suspended at 2:0 for him in the last set).

    Serve & volley: Martin 13/24, Pioline 1/4

☆ The rivalry of these two-time major runners-up was ended at 6-5 for Martin (Pioline had won their first four meetings)

Both Martin & Pioline, en route to the semifinal, defeated the US Open 1997 finalists trailing 0-2 in sets: Pioline d. Rafter in 1R, Martin d. Rusedski in 4R
