  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 43-40, 27-13, 45-38 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    29 % Agassi – 31 of 106
    25 % Ferreira – 25 of 100

I consider Ferreira [13] as the best Open Era player to never participate in a Slam final. In the last quarter of the ’94 season, he was in a terrific form, winning 24 out of his 25 tournament matches, and his lone defeat from that period comes from the third round encounter against Agassi [20]. Hypothetically, if Ferreira had won that match, he would have reached his lone major final, but in the fourth round awaited Chang – Ferreira’s second toughest opponent behind Agassi – so really tough to say what would have happened. Nevertheless, Ferreira raced to a 3:1* (40/30) lead playing a FH passing-shot from a position he was usually winning points – that one he lost, also the set after casual volley errors, and the match run away from him. In the 3rd set he came back from saving a break point at 1:3, but Agassi was too solid, and didn’t bother after failing to serve the match out at 5:4. It was just their second meeting, ultimately their rivalry ended at 11-0 for Agassi. Perhaps Ferreira would have defeated Agassi if they’d met for the first time in 1993; that year Ferreira was already established as a “1st league player” while Agassi was suffering a moderate crisis, and the fact Ferreira was hitting forehands harder, could discourage the great American. However, when they met for the first time in 1994 (Toronto), Agassi was already under Brad Gilbert’s guidance, playing more tactical tennis, and he knew that facing opponents like Ferreira, he needed to be more patient from the baseline.

    Serve & volley: Agassi 1/1, Ferreira 11/19
