  1. Voo de Mar says:

Points won directly behind the serve:
    34 % Pioline – 40 of 115
    24 % Medvedev – 23 of 95

An ugly night session match of the players who were delivering their best tennis in 1993 even though there’s a five year difference between them. People expected 19-year-old Medvedev [8] to be the main rival for Sampras in the second half of the 90s. Medvedev was obtaining very good results everywhere in 1993 defeating top players, but for some reason [14] Pioline’s style (versatility without any holes) didn’t suit him; that year they faced each other thrice on three surfaces (clay, grass, hard), and every time the Frenchman left the court as a victor dropping a set – in New York City after the most one-sided encounter. It looked like a potentially very interesting match until 1-all in the 2nd set when strings in Medvedev’s Mizuno racquet gone – he changed the racquet and needed about thirty minutes to feel well the “new” one. In the meantime Pioline collected seven consecutive games in total. At 1-all in the 3rd set he lost his serve after the longest game of the match (five deuces). The Ukrainian led 2:1* in the last set when another bad streak occurred to him, that time more thanks to Pioline’s very good shots than Medvedev’s casual errors.

    Serve & volley: Pioline 2/3, Medvedev 2/5
