  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 40-37, 27-15, 12-25, 28-22 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    30 % Mayotte – 32 of 105
    16 % Chang – 17 of 101

At the US Open ’89, Chang [7] believed he’d achieve something other 17-year-old Slam champions (Borg, Wilander, Becker) were unable, namely winning two Slams in the same season. He advanced to the fourth round not dropping a set, led against Mayotte 5:2* (15/0) in the 1st set, in the quarterfinals awaited Lendl, whom Chang had defeated in their famous French Open ’89 clash. And then, at 0/15 in the 8th game, Mayotte [10] played a passing-shot winner which was a rarity on his serve due to his attitude to attack the net constantly either directly behind the serve or after an approach-shot – that point rewrote the script, the twelve years older American won 11 games losing just one – perhaps he was playing his best tennis in that stretch. In the 3rd set he dropped his serve twice to trail 0:3 and didn’t try to level, but came back to his strong disposal as the 4th set unfolded. He broke in the 1st and 9th games, not being threatened in any of his four service games, he finished the match with a high FH volley & celebrated showing a lot of emotions. Mayotte and Chang faced each other thrice, each time at majors, and Mayotte won all those matches, respectively: 3-0, 3-1, 3-2… the last one at Wimbledon ’91 when the end of his career was on the horizon (he fended off a couple of match points in the 4th set).
