    Points won by each set: | 31-18, 45-46, 33-21 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    34 % Lendl – 36 of 103
    18 % Arias – 17 of 91

The almost 19-year-old Arias [9], using a wooden racquet (switched to a graphite one in 1984) was a sensation of the year 1983; before the US Open he had won three titles (including the second biggest event on clay at the time – Rome), thus expectations were high it’d be the first of his many major semifinals. Nothing like this happened though, and Arias, who’d moved upwards from No. 21 to 6 in 1983, dropped to No. 14 the following year, and another years meant his downhill which led to mediocrity in the late 80s. Against Lendl [2], he played well in the 2nd set, manufacturing a triple set point at 5:4 on return – Lendl saved it quickly with a FH winner, unreturned serve and an overhead (his FH approach-shot landed on the sideline). The Czechoslovak took the tie-break 7/3, and won the last four games of the 3rd set (Arias led 40/0 again in the lost game, this time on serve trailing 1:2).

    Serve & volley: Lendl 4/9, Arias 1/1

Prior to Lendl’s confrontation, Arias – the youngest US Open semifinalist in history at the time – had defeated
    Nystrom 3-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0, 6-0, and
    [4] Noah 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5
in back-to-back matches. The 2-hour 50-minute victory over Noah, remained Arias’ most valuable ‘best of five’ win of his career
